Just Transitions: fairness in the face of change
Net zero by 2050 is Australia’s committed response to climate change.
The challenge to decarbonise is not just about the technology that will get us to a cleaner, more sustainable future. It’s about how we get there without leaving vast swathes of the Australian people behind.
A just transition must be exactly that – fair and inclusive. And it has to recognise what net zero means for communities across the country – both the opportunities and the challenges.
The Latrobe Valley is in the midst of a transition. The Hazlewood Brown Coal Mine closed in 2017 after 60 years of operation, the Yallourn coal mine will cease electricity production in 2028 and Loy Yang A will close by 2035.
The locals are aware the writing is on the wall for coal, the question is what comes next.
This panel will discuss the situation in the Latrobe Valley and how a just transition is not a philosophical concept for the community – but rather a much-desired outcome of a very real challenge.
