Finding their voice

Vocalists at Trinity’s 2014 jazz program take the rhythm to new heights.

For the first time, this year’s jazz program saw vocal tutors included on the curriculum.

Sue Karzis, Director of Partnerships and Engagement, Pathways School said this was possibly the best ever jazz program that Trinity has ever run.

‘The New York Jazz Symposium reached a new pinnacle in 2014 with inspirational performances in the final concert by the students. Carl Allen and the faculty staff inspired the students to not only play great jazz music, but to make lasting friendships and connections, which will last beyond the week at Trinity College. All of the staff and students who attended the Valedictory witnessed the incredible passion of all involved in the program.’

Over 39 kids attended this year’s New York Jazz Symposium at the College, from 30 June to 4 July.

Legendary jazz drummer Carl Allen joined a luminous array of jazz greats from The New York Jazz Symposium – including Rodney Jones, Mat Jodrell, Carla Cook, Jordan Pettay, Chris Ziemba and Devin Starks – to pass on their musical wisdom in drumming, guitar, brass, singing, sax, piano and double bass.

This year’s program also included a jazz movie night, improv sessions, theory discussions and a final concert in the Chapel.
